GRATITUDE CENTER
🥮 Mooncake Making Event 🥮
Thank you to our 11 students who joined our Mooncake Making Event on a sunny Saturday morning on September 2th for a volunteering event with us. For this Mooncake Making Event, we partnered with the Chinese Newcomer’s Association. Seniors were paired with students to make mooncakes for the Autumn Moon Festival. The professional pastry chefs at iCafe were invited to teach the group how to make red bean mooncakes. Also, this cultural exchange was filmed and broadcasted to Chinese national news network, CCTV.
🙂 Meet and Greet 🙂
Thank you to our 13 scholars who joined our Meet and Greet event on a sunny Sunday on September 17th to learn more about CCSC and to meet other scholarship applicants. We hope the scholars all had fun getting to meet new people. Making spaghetti towers with one another required a lot of collaboration and coordination, and it was amazing to see all the tall towers that were made. Afterwards, scholars celebrated by making and eating their own handmade pizzas.
If you attended these events and want access to more photos from them, please reach out to us at fit@sfccsc.org.

🍂 Indigenous Peoples’ Day 🍂
In 2021, President Joe Biden proclaimed Indigenous Peoples’ Day as a national holiday. This change in name from Columbus Day celebrates the land, language, spirit, knowledge, and traditions of indigenous people across America. The purpose of Indigenous Peoples’ day is to honor the first inhabitants of America and the Tribal Nations that continue to make up America. This year, Indigenous Peoples’ Day falls on October 9, 2023.

🌕 October Hunter’s Moon 🌕
For the month of October, the full moon called the Hunter’s Moon will rise for several nights starting on Friday, October 27th. The Hunter’s Moon will reach peak illumination at 7:24PM on Saturday, October 28th. During this time, animals begin to fatten up in preparation for the winter season. This moon cycle is called the Hunter’s Moon because it is a signal for hunters to prepare for the upcoming cold winter by going hunting. The Hunter’s Moon is also called the Sanguine Moon or Blood moon, associated with the blood from hunting or the color of the changing autumn leaves.
