April is national stress awareness month, so take this time for self-care and to breath and relax. Read on to learn more about upcoming fun, informative FIT program events, resources, and information.

 

GRATITUDE CENTER

💼 Interview Preparation Workshop 💼

Thank you to our 15 students who joined our Interview Preparation Workshop on a sunny Sunday afternoon on March 10th to learn more about how to prepare for interviews. Through this workshop, participants learned more about the interview process, commonly asked questions, and good vs bad responses to interview questions. Good luck to everyone that has interviews in the future!

 

🍀 St Patrick’s Day Volunteer Event 🍀

Thank you to our 15 volunteers who joined our St. Patrick’s Day Volunteer Event on a sunny Sunday afternoon on March 17th to facilitate fun activities for elementary school students. It was a great experience for participants to read, make crafts, do science experiments, and play games with younger children. We hope everyone had a fulfilling time bringing joy to students on St. Patrick’s Day.

🧠 Stress Management Workshop 🧠

For this month’s workshop, we partnered with Chinatown Child Development Center to host the Spring Break Stress Management Workshop. Through this event, you can learn more about the role stress plays in our lives, how to manage stress well, and more. More information about the workshop is can be found below:

🌸 Cherry Blossom Festival Volunteering 🌸


Celebrate Japanese and Japanese American culture by volunteering at the Cherry Blossom Festival! At this volunteer event, you will complete tasks to maintain the area, so guests can fully enjoy the festival. Listed below are the event details:

LOCAL EVENTS

🌸 Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival 🌸

Celebrate the largest Cherry Blossom Festival on the West Coast with the Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival on April 13-14 and April 20-21 this year. The Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival is one of California’s most prominent celebrations of Japanese and Japanese American culture. This vibrant celebration of Japanese culture has been around since 1968 and attracts over 220,000 attendees every year.

 

🇲🇽 Cesar Chavez Parade & Festival 🇲🇽

Join the annual Celebration of Cesar Chavez Day on Saturday, April 13th from 11AM-6PM with a parade and festival. This holiday celebrates and commemorates the life and work of the labor  and civil rights leader, Cesar Chavez. The parade will begin at Dolores Park on 19th Street & Guerrero Street and the street fair festival will start afterwards between Folsom & Bryant Street.

 

🌎 Earth Day SF 🌎

Come together to enjoy live music and food, create art, and inspire hope for the future at Earth Day SF on April 21st. Through this festival, you can also learn more about impactful consumer choices and how to participate in green activism. For this year’s earth day, there is a new venue at The New Farm, filled with native plants and edible gardens that celebrate sustainable living. The location of this event is 10 Cargo Way, San Francisco, CA, 94124.

 

RESOURCE

📚 Youth Engaged in Library Leadership Program 📚

Youth Engaged in Library Leadership (YELL) is a workforce development program designed for high school juniors and seniors and recent high school graduates that requires a weekly commitment over the summer. Interns work collaboratively with local librarians and assist with content creation, support STEM and literacy activities, and develop project-based, youth led events. YELL interns are required to attend weekly meetings, orientation and trainings that support content creation and development, execution and evaluation of a team project. Time commitment is 15-20 hours each week.


Interns will receive a stipend every two weeks, and every participant who completes the requirements for YELL will also be awarded a $500 scholarship deposited into their K2C or ScholarShare529 account in the fall after the internship is completed.


Applications are due by April 12, 2024.

 

🖼️ Anti Tobacco Art and Video Contest 🖼️

SFUSD students are invited to create either a 30-90 second video or any form of art for SFUSD’s Anti-Tobacco/Vaping Art and Video Contest. Winners will receive $200!

All Submissions must include at least three facts about anti-smoking/vaping, and will be judged by category: Elementary School, (4th-5th grade), Middle School (6th-8th grade), High School, (9th-12th grade), and LGBTQ 4th-12th grade. Applications are due by April 19, 2024.

 

🖥️ Mission Bit’s Free Summer Coding Classes 🖥️

Take Mission Bit’s free summer coding courses and make money while you do it! These courses are open to San Francisco high schoolers ages 13-19. These courses will take place from June 11 to July 24 on Tuesdays to Thursdays from 10AM to 2:30PM. The courses offered are: Intro to Python (remote), Intro to Python (in-person), and Intro to Web Design (remote). The applications for all three courses are due by April 28, 2024.

As the month of April is Stress Management Awareness Month, here are some tips to manage your stress:

  • Take breaks from watching, reading, or social media

  • Eat healthy, well-balanced meals and exercise regularly

  • Give yourself a break when you feel stressed

  • Get enough sleep and take naps when needed

  • Take deep breaths, stretch, or meditate

  • Make time to unwind and do activities that you enjoy

  • Connect with others like friends, family, or community
