Pride, Purpose & Community

And June has arrived! Thank you as always for your support of our programs and helping us to provide services that help people succeed in our incredible city.
Last month we celebrated the graduation of our latest Western Cooking Class -- equipping students with skills for careers in the culinary field. We also hosted a Chinese History Competition for youth, conducted outreach at several community events and our youth volunteered at a couple of events, too. Also, Summer Camp starts this month -- a chance for K-5 students to learn while having fun, too!
In June, we also celebrate Pride and Juneteenth -- honoring the resilience, contributions and continued fight for justice within LGBTQ+ and African American communities.
Next month, a new CityBuild class begins, preparing participants for union careers in the construction trades. The next cohort available to sign up for will begin early next year.
We hope you have a wonderful month. Keep reading for more about what we're doing at CCSC.

Together in Action
Laptop Giveaway

On May 24, 2025, Charity Cultural Services Center (CCSC) participated in an event at the San Francisco Main Library, where AT&T, in partnership with HumanIT, distributed 200 laptops to students in need. The event was supported by five local organizations: CCSC, CYC, MissionBit, Oasis for Girls, and Sunset Youth Services. This initiative provided essential technology to help bridge the digital divide, ensuring that more students have access to the resources they need to succeed academically and beyond.
Computer Coaching

Last month, Charity Cultural Services Center hosted a computer learning session focused on helping community members access forms and enter information online. We were grateful to have support from the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD), whose staff joined us to provide one-on-one coaching and guidance throughout the session.
Chinese History Youth Competition

Charity Cultural Services Center was proud to host the sixth Youth Chinese History Competition on May 17 during AAPI Heritage Month. High school students showcased their knowledge by answering questions about Chinese history in both written and spoken Chinese. Congratulations to the winners and thank you to everyone who participated!

CAAGE Honors Our Executive Director

Our Executive Director, Ashley Cheng, was recently recognized by CAAGE for her outstanding leadership and long-standing commitment to community empowerment. The recognition highlighted her years of service developing workforce programs, expanding access to education and training and building partnerships that uplift underserved communities. This honor reflects the deep respect she has earned throughout San Francisco’s nonprofit and civic sectors. Congratulations, Ashley!
Community Commendation

CCSC received a commendation for its support and outreach efforts in the diverse communities of San Francisco during the 25th Annual Community and Diversity Employment Day. We are honored to be acknowledged.
AAPI Heritage Month

San Francisco’s 2025 AAPI Heritage Month was a lively and meaningful celebration filled with performances, community events and cultural activities. The month brought people together to honor AAPI stories, traditions and contributions. We were proud to be a community supporter for the Cultural Festival in Chinatown on May 31st.
New Lanterns Along Our Street

We’re grateful to BeChinatown for hanging lights and lanterns along Commercial Alley to brighten the space and help attract positive foot traffic and business activity. This added visibility brings new energy to the alley, which has long faced challenges with vandalism and graffiti. It’s a welcome improvement for our local businesses and the community.
Community Outreach

At CCSC, building connections across the community is central to our mission. Our outreach helps raise awareness about available programs and services while fostering stronger partnerships with local organizations.
In May, we participated in several events, including Chow Fun, the May Day Career Fair and many more.
Workshop at LYRIC

Charity Cultural Services Center at LYRIC’s Center for LGBTQQ+ Youth doing a workshop for 18-24 year olds. Providing resources in our vocational training in our culinary, construction, youth and health programs. Great to meet everyone!

Youth Programs
FIT Youth Volunteer at Leap Imagination Fair

Our FIT youth had a great time volunteering at the 2025 Leap Imagination Fair on May 17 at the County Fair Building in Golden Gate Park. They helped with kids’ arts and crafts, face painting and supported interactive games throughout the day. The fair was full of creativity and energy, with local artists and makers also selling their handmade goods. It was a lively, hands-on event that gave our youth a chance to connect with the community in a fun and meaningful way.
Family in Transition (FIT)

Family in Transition (FIT) is a cultural and identity program primarily serving AAPI students, but open to all high school students in San Francisco. Through monthly workshops and volunteer opportunities, participants build confidence, explore different cultures and strengthen their college and career readiness. The program supports students in developing a stronger sense of identity and connection to their community.
PK5 Tutoring

PK5 Tutoring is a virtual English tutoring program for PK-5th grade students, led by high school youth. It helps elementary school students in underserved communities enhance their reading and comprehension skills.
We’re seeking high school youth passionate about supporting these students to lead the next generation of this impactful program. For more details on available positions, visit: bit.ly/leadccsc.

Culinary Programs

When Derrick Li immigrated to San Francisco in 2007, he had never tasted a cocktail and struggled to find work as a graphic designer. That changed when he joined CCSC’s bartending training program. After graduating, Li went on to hone his skills and today he owns two acclaimed bars in San Francisco: Blind Pig in Chinatown and Dragon Horse in SoMa. He’s worked at top hotels and earned national recognition in competitive bartending, finishing second in the prestigious World Class competition. Li’s story is a powerful example of how workforce training can open doors and change lives. Read his full story in the SF Examiner.
Another Success Story

Jessica came to us searching for direction and a career she could be proud of. With a passion for baking, she enrolled in our Western cooking program, where she quickly stood out as a star student. While she honed her culinary skills, we also helped her prepare a strong resume, build interview confidence and explore job opportunities. Near the end of her training, we connected her to a part-time role at Uncle Tetsu, a Japanese cheesecake company.
After graduating in December 2024, Jessica was hired full-time as a baker at Uncle Tetsu, where she continues to thrive. We’re proud to have supported her journey into a career she loves.
Recent Graduates

Our culinary and bartending/barista students have been busy honing their skills in the kitchen and behind the bar -- from precise knife work and creative plating to brewing espresso drinks and learning the art of mixology. These hands-on training moments highlight their dedication and growth as they prepare for careers in the foodservice and hospitality industries.
Culinary Classes Open for Enrollment

Our classes in cooking, bartending/barista and hospitality are open for enrollment! No prior industry experience is necessary. Get more information on our job training and placement programs in our information flyer. If you know someone who is interested in signing up, please use our interest form.
