Project DIALUP (Digital Literacy Mentorship)

Project DIALUP is a community-based digital literacy mentorship program that connects youth with seniors and other community members to build confidence and skills using everyday technology. The program is rooted in intergenerational learning, cultural responsiveness, and language access, with a focus on serving the Chinatown community in San Francisco.
Through Project DIALUP, high school and young adult participants are trained to serve as digital literacy mentors. These youth mentors provide hands-on support to community members who want to better understand and use digital tools that are increasingly necessary for daily life.
What the Program Provides
Youth mentors work directly with community members to support practical digital skills such as using tablets and smartphones, navigating the internet, setting up email accounts, accessing online services, and understanding basic digital safety. Instruction is delivered in a patient, supportive environment that respects different learning paces and language needs.
While seniors are a primary focus, the program also serves other community members who face barriers to digital access or confidence.
Youth Mentorship and Leadership Development
Project DIALUP is also a leadership and workforce development opportunity for youth ages 15 to 24. Youth mentors receive training, guidance, and real-world experience teaching others, building communication skills, responsibility, and confidence. Basic Chinese language ability is preferred to support effective communication with community members.
Youth commit approximately 16 hours to the program and gain valuable experience in community service, teaching, and mentorship.
