Fall into New Routines


Welcome to the FIT program! The start of the new school year brings along many new things to experience, including this program. Read on to learn more about upcoming fun, informative FIT program events, resources, and information.


 

GRATITUDE CENTER

Fall Orientation


A warm thank you to our 7 participants who joined the orientation on September 25th! We hope you all got a great introduction to the FIT program and feel more comfortable with how the semester will unfold. We’re excited to see you at our upcoming events! Who knows, maybe we’ll have another water vs. … rematch.


 

THIS MONTH’S FIT EVENTS


Chinatown Cleanup - Volunteer

Participate in the Chinatown Cleanup volunteer event on Saturday, October 5th from 9:50AM to 11AM. In this event, you will work with other volunteers from Refuse Refuse SF to pick up litter around Chinatown San Francisco. You will be given equipment such as a trash pick up stick, gloves, and trash bags. You will meet everyone at:

Festivals & Folklore - Workshop

In the spirit of the harvest season, we will hold a workshop on harvest festivals around the world on Saturday, October 19, 2024 from 1pm to 2:30pm. New Yam Festival. Mooncake Festival. Mehregan. Chuseok. Erntedankfest. If you are unfamiliar with any of these festivals, this is the opportunity to learn more about them. And because October is synonymous with Halloween and the spooky season, we will also exchange superstitions and find the origins of common ones that we hear about. The location of this workshop is:

The Great Hauntway - Volunteer

Surprise! We have another volunteering opportunity for Halloween. On Sunday, October 27th from 12:15pm to 4:30pm, we have 10 spots available for helping run the neighborhood trick-or-treat party. The spots are first come, first serve. Each person will be paired with another person to form a team, and each team will have a different schedule (see the table below).  We currently have more spots than there are students in the program so feel free to invite your friends to come. You are welcome to attend the event in a costume!

LOCAL EVENTS

Harvest Fest


Grab your cowboy hat and mosey down to TJPA’s Salesforce Park for a downtown hoedown like no other! From 4 to 7 p.m. this Saturday, 10/5, enjoy free activities like square dancing featuring John Barleycorn and dance caller Connor McGuire, a mini-pumpkin patch, fall photo ops, pumpkin decorating, and more!


Please note, mini-pumpkins and decorations are first-come, first-served while supplies last.


 

2024 PROXY Fall Series: Inside Out 2

The 2024 PROXY Outdoor Theater is showing Inside Out 2 on Saturday, 10/26 from 7pm to 8:45pm at 432 Octavia Street San Francisco, CA 94102. The event is free and open to the public. Grab a blanket and a friend (or two) to enjoy the movie. (It is advised to go early to find a good spot.)

uAspire Scholarship List


uAspire regularly compiles and updates scholarships on their uAspire Scholarship List, making the scholarship search easier. It includes information such as the deadline, scholarship amount, target location, and minimum GPA. Their scholarships are categorized by location, with Bay Area being one of the options. They have scholarships for high school students and college students, so check it out if you are on a scholarship search or want to prepare to apply to them in the future. 


Crankstart Scholarship


The Crankstart Scholarship is a new scholarship for Balboa, Galileo, Mission, or Burton high school seniors. They award 50 scholarships each year, which will be given to awardees for up to 5 years. If accepted, there are other benefits such as an emergency fund (of up to $1000), workshops (financial literacy, career preparation, professional networking), and opportunity fund (for unpaid summer internships, study abroad, etc.) to support your journey. If you have any questions or would like to apply, please email crankstartscholarship@uaspire.org. The scholarship opens Nov. 15th.


Q: How much will you be awarded if you recieve the scholarship?

A: Between $1500 and $15000 per year for up to 5 years. The amount will be determined by the financial aid that you receive, the cost of college tuition, and SAI.


To be eligible, you...

  • Are a graduating senior from Balboa, Mission, Galileo, or Burton High School in the class of 2025.

  • Intend to enroll in a postsecondary program at a bachelor's degree granting public or non-profit college in Fall 2025

  • Have an unweighted GPA of 2.5 or higher

  • Completed the FAFSA or CADAA application

  • Have an SAI below 6660 (may be raised this year - SAI is the score you receive after you complete the FAFSA/ CADAA)

  • Are enrolled full-time

  • Meet the A-G requirement


2024 Good Tidings Community Service Scholarship


The Good Tidings Foundation awards high school seniors who recognize the benefits of serving their community. The $10,000 scholarship check will be dispersed evenly over the course of 4 years. Winners will be notified by November 27, 2024. A total of 10 applicants will be accepted to receive this scholarship.


Please note that a letter of recommendation is required in order to submit your application.


The criteria for this scholarship are:

  • High School Senior graduating in 2025

  • A resident of one of the following California counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Lake, Marin, Monterey, Napa, Sacramento, San Benito, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Santa Clara, Solano, Sonoma, Stanislaus, Yolo

  • Winners must volunteer a minimum of 1 shift (~2-4 hours) for our Good Tidings' Winter Wonderland Toy Giveaway Program in Burlingame, CA taking place from December 8 - 21, 2024

  • Must plan on attending college, vocational, or continuing education. 


Applications are due by Nov. 8th at 12pm.

Gourd-geous Harvest

Many fruits and vegetables are at its peak flavor during the Fall, when the weather grows colder. Certain greens like cabbage, broccoli, and kale are sweeter and less bitter since they prefer colder climates. See this list for an alphabetical list of fruits and vegetables that are especially tasty this season.
